Lesson Plan on the Scientific Method
Based on the Development of Lorenzo's Oil

Lorenzo's Oil

This lesson provides a mental exercise in applying the scientific method and developing hypotheses in an interesting real world situation. It is designed to be used with the movie Lorenzo's Oil. The lesson plan builds interest by pointing out that despite the Odones' hope that they had found a therapy for ALD and the claims made in the movie, the effect of Lorenzo's Oil on Lorenzo was an anomaly. It could not be consistently repeated in scientific experiments with other boys suffering from Adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD). It was only by luck and perseverance that the Oil was found to be helpful to boys who were quite different than Lorenzo.

The lesson plan has an introductory handout, several visual instructional aids, and a comprehension test/homework assignment with an answer key. A list of the curriculum standards for the ten most populous states that are satisfied by the lesson plan is also provided. The lesson plan is suitable for classes studying the scientific method in grades 8 - 12.

Our educational materials are used by thousands of teachers nationwide.

Lesson Plan Excerpt

To give teachers and parents an idea of what the lesson plan contains we have set out a brief excerpt from the proposed lecture.

Did the steps taken by the Odones to develop Lorenzo's Oil conform to the scientific method? We are at the point in the movie when both the restricted diet low in VLCSFAs and the immunosuppression trial in Boston have failed. Lorenzo's symptoms are getting worse. The Odones realize that the doctors won't have a cure until long after Lorenzo is dead. The Odones start on a journey to try to find some way to help their son.

Question #1: Can anyone describe the model of the sink with the plugged drain and what each of its four major components represents?
