This lesson provides a mental exercise in applying the scientific method and developing hypotheses in an interesting real world situation. It is designed to be used with the movie Lorenzo's Oil. The lesson plan builds interest by pointing out that despite the Odones' hope that they had found a therapy for ALD and the claims made in the movie, the effect of Lorenzo's Oil on Lorenzo was an anomaly. It could not be consistently repeated in scientific experiments with other boys suffering from Adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD). It was only by luck and perseverance that the Oil was found to be helpful to boys who were quite different than Lorenzo.
The lesson plan has an introductory handout, several visual instructional aids, and a comprehension test/homework assignment with an answer key. A list of the curriculum standards for the ten most populous states that are satisfied by the lesson plan is also provided. The lesson plan is suitable for classes studying the scientific method in grades 8 - 12.
Our educational materials are used by thousands of teachers nationwide.
