Learner Outcomes/Objectives: Students will be introduced to some of the world's most interesting and beautiful caves and to their strange inhabitants, extremophiles and troglobites. Students will be introduced to the different types of extremophiles and the terms scientists have developed to describe them.
Rationale: Caves are an important geological feature seldom directly experienced by people living in modern cultures. Extremophiles and troglobites are examples of the tremendous adaptability of life.
Description of the Snippet: This is a portion of the Planet Earth chapter on caves.
Planet Earth consists of many extraordinary and beautiful pictures of the flora, fauna and geological wonders of the planet Earth.
Using the Snippet in Class:
Prepare for class by deciding which of the supplemental materials and vocabulary to present to the class. Cue the DVD to the beginning of the snippet. After playing the snippet, present the supplemental materials and review the structure of the words scientists have coined to describe extremophiles.
