Description: It is France in the mid-nineteenth century. Marguerite, a beautiful courtesan, lives a life of extravagance, but she is ill with consumption, an incurable disease. She has never known a true love. Then Marguerite meets Armand, a young man who has applied to work in the foreign service. They fall in love. Marguerite renounces her life in the demimonde and they plan to marry. But Armand's father comes to Marguerite. He reminds her that if she and Armand are married, Armand's career would be doomed and his sister would be excluded from "good" society. Armand's father pleads with Marguerite to leave. What will she do?
