SET UP THE SUB

  • Classes don't have to be a waste of time when the teacher is away

  • Most teachers have movies they'd like to show their students, if only they could find the time

  • Movies that further curriculum goals can keep students engaged and advance their learning

"Set Up the Sub" is a lesson plan template allowing teachers to be sure that when they are away, their students will focus on curriculum and the attainment of standards.
-- Checklist for Teachers "Setting up the Sub"

    -- Instructions to the Substitute

-- Film Study Worksheet for English Language Arts and Literature classes.
(Worksheets for classes in other subjects will vary, depending on the movie and the curriculum to which the movie relates. Teachers for those subjects can develop their own class materials for the film.)
Keep a pre-selected DVD (or VHS tape) in your classroom along with the handouts, readings, and other materials that the substitute will need. The Checklist for Teachers will prompt you to develop the materials you need. If necessary, as the class moves forward in the curriculum, select a different film and prepare new materials in case you are absent. Keep the materials you have already prepared for the same time period next year.

"Set Up the Sub" is an excellent way to create curriculum related lesson plans for use when the teacher is away.

TEACHERS: A film or movie can be an alternative educational experience that highlights points covered by the curriculum. Each Movie Lesson Plan and Learning Guide will help you maximize the benefits that your class derives from watching and discussing the movie.

PARENTS: Watch the movie with your children and briefly talk about its message. Often, just one or two comments will make the film a meaningful experience. Your family will grow closer as all of you learn about history, culture and people. You will gain some positive control over screen time.
