Billy Elliot

(Breaking Out, Families in Crisis, Father/Son, Courage, Grieving, Friendship, Parenting, Grandparents; GBLTQ, Education; Ethical Emphasis: Caring, Responsibility, Respect; Trustworthiness; Subjects: Dance; World/England) [12+]

The Kids Are All Right (2010)

MPAA Rating: R for strong sexual content, nudity, language, and some teen drug and alcohol use; Director: Lisa Cholodenko. This is a film about a loving lesbian family in which the two children were each born from one of their moms with sperm from the same sperm donor. The plot is excellent and the insights contain positive lessons, which are quite predictable. Our only problem with the movie is the mildly explicit sex scenes that were simply unnecessary and obviously included just to sell the movie. For this reason, we have not prepared a Learning Guide for the film.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower

(Literature/U.S.; SEL: Child Abuse; Courage; GBLTQ; Friendship; Romantic Relationships; Mental Illness; Suicide; Ethical Emphasis: Caring) [14+]

Philadelphia

(1993) MPAA Rating: PG-13 for some graphic language and thematic material; Director: Jonathan Demme. This is a breakthrough movie promoting understanding of gay people and those with dreaded illnesses. TWM is considering preparing a Learning Guide for this film.

Precious

(Child Abuse, Self-esteem, GBLTQ; Parenting, Taking Care of Yourself; Subjects: Health; ELA (for cross-curricular assignments); Psychology; Ethical Emphasis: Responsibility, Caring) [15+; 121 minutes]
